slow going

I feel like I was a knitting speed demon a couple of weeks ago, and it’s all come grinding to a halt. I’ve (yet again!) fallen behind in the mystery sock KAL. I’ve only just started Clue 3, which is the heel, and I’m really enjoying knitting a heel flap again after all the short row heels I’ve been doing lately! I’m a little disappointed in my yarn choice though. It’s not the yarn itself that bothers me, the Zettl Valbella is a fairly decent workhorse yarn, but the colour. Even though the designer said that the pattern might work better in a lighter colour, I chose an inky navy blue, and the more I knit the more I’m disappointed in how the dark colour obscures the pattern detail, and there’s a lot of detail in these socks! More than once I’ve been tempted to frog and restart them in another colour, but the fact that I have no idea what other colour I’d like to see this in, and that it’s taken me a month to get this far stops me every time. I’m hoping that they’ll improve after blocking and wearing them…

There hasn’t been a whole lot of progress on the self patterning socks either. I knit the heel and a couple of inches past it sometime last week, and I’ve only managed a couple of rows here and there since then.

There’s a rather strange ridge on one side of the toe of these, which I think was caused by my provisional cast on being much too loose. These were cast on for cinema knitting, and I didn’t notice the ridge until enjoying a coffee about half an hour before the film (The Descendants) by which time I was in no mood to frog and restart, so I forged on thinking that it might come out after a bit of blocking.

I did a little bit of a test block when I got home and the ridge doesn’t seem to have gone anywhere, but I love seeing how much of a difference blocking can make. The stitches on the foot of the sock were really quite uneven looking because I was using frogged yarn that was still all kinked up, and you can really see how the stitches have smoothed out after a quick block. The sock that I’d frogged only got as far the heel, so the post heel stitches on this sock are nice and smooth again, but I didn’t think that such a small detail could make such a big difference! I have absolutely no intention of frogging this sock again, so I’ll just have chalk it up as a character ridge and hope that a multitude of wears, washes and blocks will even it out over time.

The mystery sock knit along is such an interesting concept! I can't wait to see how yours turns out.

It's pretty fun to do, although it seems that I'm not very good at the "along" part! Something to work on.... :)
The socks look great, absolutely perfect

For the darker sock, have you tried it on? Most socks are knit with negative ease so they spread out when worn. Maybe the pattern will be more noticeable then?

Good point! I haven't actually tried it on. ! I'm knitting it on 9inch circulars and I'm too lazy to transfer them off, so I tentatively tried to pull them on the other day (despite knowing full well that it wouldn't work - I'm a fool!) but I have tried stretching it out a little on my hands and a over a bottle to see how it opens out. It definitely looks better when it's stretched out a bit, but the lace is still a little obscured. I'll probably try to try it again on when I'm further down the foot and hopefully won't lose any stitches in the process!
Sorry to hear that your yarn is obscuring your pattern. On the bright side, that's one of the prettiest shades of blue I've ever seen. I think you'll be fine in the end. Also, love the character ridge in your sock and glad you let it stay. My most recent has a "character cable" in the middle of the sole where I dropped a stitch and picked it up in not quite the right spot. Oops! And also, oh well! :)

Thanks, isn't it a lovely shade of blue? It's not a fancy yarn in the slightest, but it's such a pretty colour.

Yay for character knits! I love the idea of a character cable. Oh well indeed! It would be so boring if everything was flawless :)
It's a lovely blue but maybe the frog pond is the answer and you'd go faster in a colour you could really enjoy the pattern in? I know I find I grind to a bit of a halt when I know I'm in two minds about something and often times frogging is the answer. Or just start something new - that's my real fall back position :)

Start something new is definitely my fall back too! When in doubt, cast on :)

The problem is, I really like the pattern and I have absolutely no idea what other yarn I'd prefer to knit this in! If I had something in mind I probably would frog, but I think I'm going to plod on with this one for now and try it on when I get further down the foot. Once I see how it looks on I'll be able to make a better decision. Or perhaps not, by the time I've knit all those stitches I'll probably find it even harder to frog!

I think that both socks look great. The blue is such a lovely color.

Thank you :) I do love the colour, I just wish you could see the pattern more!
I think the sock is looking great. I know what you mean about wanting to see more of the pattern, but you can see the pretty hearts and what looks like little twisted cables, so the detail is not entirely lost. I suspect the answer will be apparent to you once you finish the first sock, and try it on and either hate it or love it or find it's actually ok. The second sock is looking good too!

They do look like hearts, don't they? They're actually more like chevrons, but I think I like thinking of them as hearts more :)

I think you're right, there's nothing so terrible about them that makes me want to frog right this instant, so I'm only really going to be able to decide once I can try them on. Sadly, my arm isn't a good enough substitute for my leg in these circumstances!
